Facilitated by Peace Parks Foundation, supported by The Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS), and funded by the European Union (EU), this initiative focuses on preparing a Joint Operations Strategy for the marine TFCA Ponto do Ouro-Kosi Bay. The Joint Operations Committee consisting of the two protected area teams recently held an initial meeting to clarify the areas of collaboration and action and to ensure alignment with the goals of the revised SADC TFCA Programme 2023-2033. A follow-up session will be dedicated to developing an action plan, including the clarification of institutional arrangements and resourcing. This work is particularly important in the context of the imminent extension of the World Heritage Site (iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa) into Mozambique:  Maputo National Park submitted its nomination dossier earlier this year and should the application be successful, the extension into Mozambique will likely be official next year June or thereabout.

The Joint Operations Strategy outlines the practical steps needed to implement the agreed joint management objectives of a TFCA. It provides detailed guidance on daily activities, ensures that operational activities are well-coordinated, and aligns them with the broader management goals of the TFCA. Additionally, it establishes communication protocols, reporting mechanisms, and procedures for addressing operational challenges, facilitating effective collaboration across the transboundary landscape.

The foundational areas of collaboration that were discussed and confirmed at the recent workshop in St Lucia, and that will shape the Joint Operations Strategy include law enforcement, monitoring and research, tourism (supported by capacity building), finances, communication and marketing, and infrastructure.
