Development of a Joint Training Strategy

Donors/Funders:
Peace Parks Foundation; South African Wildlife College
Implementers:
GLTFCA Implementing Agencies; GLTFCA Implementing Partners; South African Wildlife College
Objectives:
The strategy should be guided by the following principles and objectives: (1) Replication - a system that can be replicated, with modifications, in other TFCA’s; (2) Feedback system - training needs across the GLTFCA are rapidly brought to the attention of concerned bodies (e.g. training institutes) and can be addressed; (3) Internal criteria - training interventions to support implementation of GLTFCA objectives & programmes; (4) National Criteria - both qualification and practical based training; and (5) SADC & International Criteria - taking into account SADC training needs and systems they have in place.

The JMB has embarked on a process to develop a GLTFCA Joint Training Strategy underpinned by Training Needs Assessment.  This need was identified by that fact that currently there is no structured way for implementing agencies, project partners and donors to implement, participate in and support joint training initiatives within the GLTFCA. The South African Wildlife College (SAWC) was appointed by PPF on behalf of the JMB to assist with the development of the Strategy.  Part of SAWC’s approach was to develop and provide a public searchable directory of skills offered by training service providers in the conservation/wildlife economy sector. It was decided this would be done for two of the GLTFCA Integrated Livelihoods Strategy Nodes namely nodes – initially K2C and then Pafuri-Sengwe. The approach to the development of the Joint Training Strategy in these two nodes include the following: (1) Training service providers for each of the node areas will be identified as well as the services they provide will be available to contact via a website. They will become the first port of call for organisations needing training assistance within the node; and (2) Training will be provided to conservation organisations (private, government, community) in order to undertake their own Training Needs Analysis (TNA). The website will allow the organisation to access their training needs annually and source a provider based on their training requirements and allowing for a much speedier turn-around times.
