Dr Anna Spenceley FRGS, has more than 25 years of experience on a diversity of sustainable tourism initiatives globally, working as an independent consultant and researcher. Dr Spenceley has led publication of many landmark publications on sustainable tourism, including for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Convention on Biological Diversity, the European Commission and the World Bank Group. She edited the landmark Handbook for Sustainable Tourism Practitioners: The Essential Toolbox (and is currently creating its 2nd edition), and also co-edited the Handbook on Managing Nature-Based Tourism amid Climate Change. Anna is part of the UN World Tourism Organisation’s Panel of Experts and is a Trustee of the Seychelles Island Foundation. Between 2010 and 2023 Anna was chair of the IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Tourism and Protected Areas Specialist Group (TAPAS Group). She a former Chair of the Independent Advisory Group of Travalyst, and was a founding Board Member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Anna is a signatory to Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency and the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism. She is currently a Senior Research Fellow with the University of Johannesburg, a Trustee of the Seychelles Island Foundation, and sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism and Tourism Planning and Development.
