The third open call for concept notes for the SADC TFCA Financing Facility, aimed at funding sustainable conservation and green economy projects in Transfrontier Conservation Areas in Southern Africa.

Background of SADC TFCA Financing Facility

The SADC TFCA Financing Facility aims to provide sustainable funding for conservation and management actions in Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) in Southern Africa. ​

  • Established to support the sustainable development of TFCAs. ​
  • Initial funding of €44 million provided by the German Government through KfW Development Bank. ​
  • Long-term goal to mobilize €100 million by 2026 from various international partners. ​
  • Managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) through its Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office. ​

Funding Allocations and Achievements

The facility has allocated significant funds to various approved proposals, demonstrating its commitment to conservation.

  • €17,085,334 allocated to 23 approved proposals to date. ​
  • Includes 11 Covid-19 Emergency Response Grants and 7 grants from the First Open Call. ​
  • The EU's NaturAfrica program has committed €10 million to support biodiversity conservation in Sub-Saharan Africa. ​

Third Open Call for Proposals

The third open call introduces a joint funding approach to address conservation and development challenges in SADC TFCAs. ​

  • Total of €5,700,000 allocated under the EU NaturAfrica funding envelope. ​
  • Grants range from €300,000 to €950,000 with a minimum of 10% co-financing required. ​
  • A maximum of two grants per TFCA is permitted, with flexibility in funding allocation based on need. ​

Objectives and Eligible Activities

The call aims to boost sustainable green economic activities that align with conservation goals. ​

  • Focus on developing value chains and business models that support conservation outcomes. ​
  • Eligible activities include sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism development, sustainable energy solutions, and innovative financing mechanisms. ​
  • Horizontal measures for inclusive and rights-based implementation are also encouraged. ​

Guidance for Applicants

Applicants must demonstrate a clear project framework and community involvement in their proposals.

  • Proposals should include a problem statement, goals, objectives, and a clear budget. ​
  • Prior consultation with government authorities is required, along with proof of registration to operate in SADC Member States. ​
  • A minimum of 10% co-financing is necessary, and projects should have a duration of 24 to 36 months. ​

Eligible Entities and Ineligible Activities

Various entities can apply, but certain activities are excluded to ensure alignment with conservation goals.

  • Eligible entities include SMEs, cooperatives, NGOs, and public/private sector entities with relevant experience. ​
  • Ineligible activities include academic research for qualifications, physical relocation of communities, and actions that harm indigenous lands or critical habitats.

Application Process and Deadlines

The application process is two-staged, with specific deadlines for concept notes and proposals.

  • Concept notes must be submitted by 5 PM SAST on 31st March 2026. ​
  • Successful applicants will be invited to submit full project proposals after concept note approval. ​
  • Key dates include a webinar on 16th January 2026 and proposal submission deadlines in August 2026.
