Daniel Marnewick is the IUCN Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Area-based Conservation Coordinator; he coordinates IUCN’s country offices and thematic programmes to achieve effective and equitable area-based conservation at scale, anchored in the Global Biodiversity Framework Targets, and utilising tools and frameworks such as the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, Other Effective Area Based Conservation Measures (OECMs), and Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), among others. Daniel works with State, civil society, and site partners across numerous countries in and beyond the region to support the assessment and strengthening of their area-based conservation using these and other tools, and making links to sustainable financing to ensure delivery of effective management. Currently he supports area-based conservation projects in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola, and the Western Indian Ocean region. His regional and global network and reach are extensive through his active role as global KBA Committee member and KBA Community Chair, WCPA member, OECM Specialist Group member and Regional Coordinator, Privately Protected Areas & Nature Stewardship Specialist Group member, and several other commissions and committees.
