Rewild Pangaea is developing a replicable model to restore degraded post-mining landscapes. Our flagship site in the /Ai /Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park lies where South Africa’s Diamond Coast meets the Orange River, in the northern Succulent Karoo, the world’s most biodiverse semi-arid region. A century of diamond mining and overgrazing, compounded by climate change, is accelerating desertification.
As mines close, we aim to turn the legacy of extraction into ecological recovery by linking mine rehabilitation with landscape restoration and high-integrity outcome-based biodiversity credits—so closing mines become biodiversity and bioeconomy hotspots.
Our Richtersveld restoration project is co-designed and implemented with the communal landowners of ±1 million hectares, which includes the National Park. We have secured community buy-in and a signed Letter of Intent authorising the pilot, and FPIC has begun through community workshops. Restoration interventions are being developed with scientific partners including SANParks and the University of Cape Town.
