UNISA - SENIOR LECTURER: NATURE CONSERVATION – FIXED-TERM

The purpose of the position: We are looking for a dynamic early to mid-career wildlife biologist with an interest in Conservation Biology to join our Nature Conservation Programme group on the level of senior lecturer. Our group has a diverse skill set, but we are looking to increase our capacity in relation to quantitative biology and conservation ecology.
Requirements and Experience:
1. PhD or equivalent in Nature Conservation / Ecology / Conservation Biology / Wildlife Management, NQF level 10 (foreign qualifications to be evaluated by SAQA).
2. The area of specialisation should reflect an integration of the various fields of the discipline of Nature Conservation.
3. Undergraduate degree with major in Nature Conservation / Ecology / Conservation Biology / Wildlife Management.
4. Able to discuss their teaching reflection and statement.
5. A minimum of 3 years’ experience, of which 2 must be teaching experience OR 3 years relevant experience (other than academia).
6. Experience in teaching postgraduate courses or postgraduate project leadership.
7. A research reflection and portfolio (all candidates).
8. A minimum of 5 research output unitsӿ during the previous 5 years (academia) OR 3 research output unitsӿ during the previous 3 years OR rated by NRF as a researcher (academia) OR a minimum of 3,5 research output unitsӿ during the previous in 5 years OR 1,5 research output unitsӿ during the previous 3 years (other than academia). (Waived if Doctoral degree obtained within last two years (all candidates)).
9. Involvement in community engagement, with evidence of how such participation will be, or has been, transferred into teaching and learning and/or research (academia) and demonstrate potential to participate in community engagement (other than academia).
10. Evidence of involvement in departmental, school, college, university committees, workplace committees or task teams and voluntary associations (academia).
11. Evidence of participation in workplace committees or task teams and voluntary associations (other than academia).

Recommendations:
1. NRF rating will be an advantage.
2. Completion ofan assessor training programme (attach certificate)
3. Experience with teaching in an ODeL environment.
4. Experience in teaching postgraduate courses or postgraduate research project supervision (other than academia).
5. Involvement in the national learned societies (academia).
6. Teaching of both undergraduate and post graduate modules in our Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma in Nature Conservation.
7. Participate in the development and improvement of teaching materials.
8. Participation in institutional committees.
9. Research should focus on Conservation Biology and Wildlife Ecology.
10. Willingness to travel to remote study sites to conduct research.
11. Willingness to participate in practical sessions that will require the incumbent to spend extended period away from home, even over weekends.
12. Undertake the supervision of post graduate students on MSc and PhD level.
13. Focus on the publication of research outputs.
14. Willingness to collaborate internally within the programme group and department.
15. Take on research projects at Telperion.
