Oceans without borders is a unique collaboration between &Beyond – a luxury travel
company with its roots in conservation and experiential guest experiences, and Wild
Impact – a non-profit organisation dedicated to working collaboratively with partner
communities and key stakeholders to conserve the wild landscapes and seascapes in which
they operate. Through this catalytic partnership, Oceans Without Borders is dedicated to
the marine conservation and island community development of Mozambique’s Bazaruto
Archipelago and Zanzibar’s Mnemba Island seascapes. Our approach is community-led
conservation through our Community and Conservation rangers who lead the OWB marine
activities and are the ambassadors for ocean conservation within the communities where
they live and beyond.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Marine Data Manager with a
postgraduate qualification in marine biology or a related field. The successful candidate will
support the analysis of habitat and biodiversity data collected through benthic
photographic surveys and Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) systems but may
include data from other sampling techniques. The role will be based in Johannesburg but
with extensive travel to support operations in the OWB seascapes. This role is ideal for
someone looking to gain hands-on experience in applied marine research and contribute
to impactful conservation initiatives across our seascapes.
Key Responsibilities:
• Process and analyse benthic photographic survey data to assess habitat
composition, coverage, and change over time.
• Review and score BRUV footage to identify and quantify fish and invertebrate
assemblages.
• Maintain and manage databases of habitat and species data, ensuring data quality
and consistency.
• Assist with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and visual outputs for
internal and external stakeholders.
• Support fieldwork preparation, including equipment maintenance, calibration, and
deployment logistics.
• Collaborate with research teams, partners, and field staff to support integrated
monitoring programmes.
• Contribute to scientific publications, reports, funding proposals and presentations
where appropriate.
• Travel frequently to OWB seascapes in Mozambique and Zanzibar
• Engage with and host &Beyond guests on OWB related activities where necessary
Requirements:
• A postgraduate degree (Honours or Master's level) in marine biology, marine
ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience with sampling techniques, specifically benthic habitat
monitoring and/or BRUV systems.
• Familiarity with marine species identification, particularly tropical coral reef
associated organisms.
• Strong analytical skills, including basic statistical analysis and data management.
• Proficiency in software such as Event Measure, Excel, R, or GIS applications is an
advantage.
• Attention to detail, good organisational skills, and ability to work both independently
and as part of a team.
• A passion for marine conservation and commitment to producing high-quality
outputs.
• SCUBA diving qualification or willingness and the ability to get SCUBA certified
Desirable:
• Experience working in tropical or sub-tropical marine ecosystems.
• SCUBA certification (Open Water or higher).
• Previous experience contributing to ecological monitoring or restoration projects.
