Meet the New SADC TFCA Advisor: Colum Zhuwau

Mr. Colum Zhuwao has joined IUCN ESARO, and seconded to the SADC Secretariat based in Gaborone, Botswana.

He is a seasoned Ecologist with over 15 years of experience in biodiversity conservation, policy development, and project implementation at both national and regional levels. He began his career in 2005 with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), where he served in several strategic roles including National Rhino Coordinator, CITES-MIKE Focal Point, and Coordinator of the ZimParks component of a UNDP-GEF 6 project aimed at enhancing biodiversity and community livelihoods in the Mid to Lower Zambezi Region. During his tenure at ZimParks, Colum also served as a key advisor to the Directorate on matters of policy and wildlife conservation, contributing to institutional decision-making and policy formulation.

In 2019, he joined the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA) Secretariat as its inaugural Technical Coordinator for Wildlife and Forest Crimes. In this role, Colum has led and overseen multiple cross-border initiatives aimed at strengthening law enforcement and combating the trafficking of wildlife and forest products across the five KAZA partner countries—Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Driven by a deep commitment to community empowerment, Colum is passionate about promoting conservation approaches that enable local communities to benefit sustainably while actively participating in natural resource protection.

He holds a Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University, USA.
