Partners United Across the Maloti-Drakensberg to Promote Tourism Safety and Community Awareness During the Festive Season

The Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Programme – under its Tourism Working Group, and in collaboration with KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, KZN Tourism and Film Authority, South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Traffic Services, Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Okhahlamba Local and Uthukela District Municipalities, National Department of Tourism, South African National Parks, Working on Fire Kishugu JV, Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network undertook a successful Festive Season Tourism Safety Awareness Campaign in the Maloti-Drakensberg region, Winterton and Bergville, Mhlwazini and Sandlwane Communities under AmaNgwane Traditional Authority, Uthukela District, KwaZulu Natal Province on 11 and 12 December 2025.

This initiative, which aligns with the implementation of the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area (MDTFCA) Branding and Marketing Memorandum of Agreement – signed on 14 May 2025 during Africa’s Travel Indaba by various tourism entities across KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, and Lesotho in support of the Maloti-Drakensberg Route (MDR) – aimed at deepening community understanding of tourism, disseminating tourist safety tips to commuters, and reinforcing South Africa’s promise of safe travel along the Maloti-Drakensberg Route.
