Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) took centre stage at ITB Berlin 2026, as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region strengthened its position as a leading destination for sustainable, cross-border tourism. Through the support of the German Government and the European Union (EU) implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and in collaboration with regional partners, Boundless Southern Africa (BSA) showcased the unique value of TFCAs to the global tourism market.

As the world’s largest tourism trade fair, ITB Berlin provided a strategic platform to promote TFCAs as integrated, multi-country destinations. Co-exhibiting under the Africa’s Eden stand, BSA engaged with over 60 tourism development partners, tour operators, and stakeholders from across the globe.

Through targeted meetings and networking engagements, the team highlighted:
• TFCA destination brochures and promotional videos.
• Newly developed cross-border itineraries.
• Investment and partnership opportunities within the region.

These interactions significantly enhanced the visibility of TFCAs as unique tourism products that combine biodiversity conservation with authentic travel experiences.

Participation at ITB Berlin enabled the expansion of key relationships within the international tourism trade. Engagements with tour operators and industry stakeholders contributed to:
• Growing the TFCA tour operator database.
• Strengthening collaboration with regional and global partners.
• Increasing interest in packaging and selling TFCA-based travel experiences.

In addition, attendance at industry events and knowledge sessions provided valuable insights into global tourism trends, helping position the region competitively in an evolving market.

A key highlight of the mission was the SADC Side Event held at Messe Berlin, where SADC, BSA, and the Southern Africa Tourism Alliance (SATA) jointly presented on the progression of regional tourism integration.

The session underscored:
• The role of TFCAs in promoting sustainable tourism.
• Cross-border collaboration as a driver of economic growth.
• Progress in aligning tourism policies across the SADC Member States.

The event attracted senior representatives from several national tourism organisations and ministries, reinforcing high-level commitment to regional tourism development.

Overall, participation at ITB Berlin 2026 reinforced Boundless Southern Africa as the umbrella brand for marketing TFCAs. The use of diverse promotional materials including itineraries, videos, and brochures proved effective in communicating the richness and diversity of TFCA experiences.

Importantly, the mission demonstrated the value of collective regional marketing. By leveraging shared platforms such as Africa’s Eden, TFCAs benefited from increased visibility and stronger positioning within the global tourism landscape.

While the mission achieved significant success, key lessons emerged:
• The need for improved digital tools for scheduling meetings.
• The importance of early and targeted promotion for side events.
• The value of aligning participation with broader regional strategies.

These insights will inform future engagements and strengthen the impact of TFCA representation at international platforms.
As global demand for sustainable and experience-based travel continues to grow, TFCAs are uniquely positioned to meet this demand. By linking conservation with tourism and regional integration, they offer a compelling model for inclusive and sustainable development.

Participation at ITB Berlin 2026 marks another important step in positioning Southern Africa as a unified, world-class tourism destination where nature, culture, and collaboration transcend borders.
