Dear TFCA Supporters and Colleagues,

Welcome to the second SADC TFCA Network Newsletter of 2025! Which has inspiring stories of 2025 transboundary conservation work.

The past 3 months have been busy for us working in TFCAs. The long anticipated TFCA 25th Anniversary International Conference and Heads of State Summit took place in Harare from the 19 - 23May. The event which was attended by over 500 delegates also included an exhibition and conference which discussed key challenges and possible solutions to the SADC TFCA Programmme. As practitioners we could not ask for a better sign of the political support across SADC Countries than the Heads of State Summit which called for investment in TFCAs and increased implementation of the programme, which called for innovative financing of TFCAs, increased involvement of rural communities including youth, mitigating human wildlife conflict and maximising the benefits for local people. They specifically asked member states to work on Marine TFCAs.

Shortly after the International Conference and Summit we got the exciting news that Angola and Zambia has signed a MOU to proceed with the establishment of a TFCA incorporating Mussuma National Park in Angola and Liuwa Plains National Park in Zambia. This transboundary ecosystem is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in the world. The MOU gives the two countries a mandate to collaborate and move towards a treaty or MOA. This TFCA is now a category B TFCA on the SADC system bring the total of A and B TFCAs to 14.

The revised TFCA Portal was launched at the during the International Conference, and we hope that it will remain the definitive source of information and directory of TFCA Network members. If you have not joined the portal, please do so at: www.tfcaportal.org

We hope you enjoy the articles contained in this newsletter. Remember to visit the TFCA portal for regular news, jobs, opportunities and resources which are not featured in this newsletter.
